Introduction:
Udaipur, the city of Dawn, is a perfect blend of natural and architectural
beauty. Surrounded by lush green hills of Aravallis, Udaipur has been a
source of inspiration for writers, poets and painters for ages. Udaipur,
a romantic spot, is situated in the southern part of Rajasthan. "City
Of Lake" as it is famously called; Maharana Udai Singh founded this
city in the year 1559. The marble palaces, lush green gardens and the lakes
make Udaipur look like a mirage in the desert. The "Venice of India"
is located in the southern parts of Rajasthan and shares borders with Gujarat
and Madhya Pradesh. Udaipur is well connected by air with cities like Delhi,
Mumbai, Jaipur and Jodhpur. History: Udaipur is famously called jewel of Mewar, a kingdom ruled by the Sisodia Dynasty for 12,00 year, making it oldest dynasty in India, perhaps in world. Descendants of the sun God, they were the only Rajput princes who refused to marry with the then ruling Mughals. The capital of Sisodias was Chittor, till the 6th century. It is believed, the Maharana had gone hunting once when he met a holy man meditating on a hill. The sage blessed the Maharana and told him to built a palace at that very spot. The Maharana did what was ordered and it came to be known as Udaipur.
Places of interest: City Palace is situated on the bank of Lake Pichola and provides soothing pleasure to the eyes. Standing tall on the hill is a series of palaces. The fort is made of granite and marble and is protected by massive walls. A blend of European and Chinese architecture has many more things to offer to the tourist. Maharana Jagat Singh built Jagdish Temple between 1628-1653 at a cost of Rs. 1.5 million at that time. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, another name of Lord Shiva, and is situated at a great height. To visit the temple one has to climb a series of stairs. A brass image of Garuda stands as a guard in front of the shrine. The Lake Palace is one of the most romantic hotels in the world. This 250-year-old palace is a perfect example of masterpiece work. The palace is located on Jag Niwas Island and stands in the middle of the Pichola Lake. Maharana Jagat Singh built it in 1743.
Travel
information: Udaipur has tropical climate, but more pleasing than other
places of Rajsthan. Winters are the best period for visiting Udaipur. It
is advisable to carry few woolens during this period. It is well connected
trough rail, road and air to major cities of India like Delhi, Agra, Lucknow,
and Chandigarh.
