Introduction: Mumbai, previously called Bombay is the major metropolitan city of India. It is the capital city of Maharashtra, one of the developed states of India. It is also known as commercial capital of India, as it heavily contributes in the economical development of India. India’s main financial and commercial centers are located here. History: Mumbai, was probably first recorded as the home of fisherfolk where a group of Buddhist monks established an outpost late during the Magadh Empire. The islands were then ruled by several rulers for over two thousand years. It were the Biritsh who realized the power of the port and then converted it into a commercial port and hub. Now, all islands have been collected into one, and now it has developed into the commercial hub of India. The name Mumbai has been used in the main local languages for as long, and is ascribed to the local goddess, Mumba (ai means mother in Marathi). The name of the city was changed to Mumbai by an act of the parliament in 1997.
Places of interest: Gateway of India is the first landmark of Mumbai a visitor sees when arriving by ship. Designed in the 16th century Gujarat style, it was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Haji Ali Mosque is the tomb of a Muslim saint who died while on pilgrimage to Mecca. Chowpatty Beach is a quite popular beach where celebration of festivals such as Coconut Day and the Ganesh Chaturthi immersions take place. Besides little kiosks selling Mumbai’s special snacks, one can find professional massesurs, pony leaders, contortionists, snake charmers, monkey-trainers, balloon sellers, flower girls and lots more.
Travel information: Mumbai is located on India’s west coast, along the Arabian Sea, in the state of Maharashtra.The best time to explore Mumbai is between the months of September and April, when the weather is relatively dry and cool. Mumbai’s international airport is the busiest airport of India. Many international and domestic airlines operate flights to Mumbai from various parts of the world and India respectively. Being the headquarter of Central and Western Railway, regular trains connect Mumbai from other major cities of India.
